Charlotte Cemetery
Rochester, New York

line

This cemetery is located on the east side of River Street near where it joins Lake Avenue. It is near the mouth of the Genesee River into Lake Ontario. This area was settled in the 1790s. In 1869 the Village of Charlotte was incorporated as a village located within in the Town of Greece. Even though the cemetery had been in existence for many years, it wasn't until July 10th 1888 that the cemetery was incorporated. Also at that time, the cemetery added the lot to the rear of the original cemetery. This lot is next to the edge of the river and is partially obscured by the hi-rise apartment complex (see map of this cemetery). Then in 1916 the entire Village of Charlotte was annexed by the City of Rochester. By the early 1950s, the Cemetery Association had disappeared and the cemetery was in terrible shape. The City of Rochester took over the care of the cemetery and it is now well cared for and most of the very old tombstones are still legible.

This list is made from many various sources. There have been two previous lists published by the D.A.R. The first list was "from the papers of Anah B. Yates and was prepared by Mary T. Douglas." The second list was taken by Myrtle R. Haynes. Added to this were some names that were in two newspaper articles on this cemetery. An article in the Rochester Morning Herald of Sept. 13, 1886 says that Samuel Clyde is buried in the cemetery. Also, the Times-Union of Nov. 6, 1954 gave names of veterans that are buried in the cemetery. Some of these veterans (James Day, James Diehl and Guy Wheeler) do not have tombstones. A visit to the cemetery in May 1987 added another 75 names. The 1987 visit missed the newer section and this was rectified in April 2002. Burial records added a few more names of those interred here without a tombstone. Monroe County Veteran Burial records added data on a few men's enlistments in the military.

There are two lists below; one for the older section and one for the newer section. Information in brackets "[]" is not on the tombstone and has been added from other sources.
