Known burials in East Cemetery
Rochester, New York

line

East Cemetery was located on the present Monroe Ave. in what is now the athletic field of Monroe High School. East Cemetery was later called the Monroe 1Street Cemetery but at the time the cemetery was used, most persons would have known it as the East Cemetery.

There was a cemetery on the east side of the Genesee River that was used before the East Cemetery. Enos Stone made a gift of a plot of land for use as a burying grounds, that was on the south side of East Avenue, opposite Gibbs Street. No deed was ever executed and space was free as needed. This small plot quickly filled and the Village of Rochesterville bought two acres of land to be used for burials on June 10, 1827 from Chester Bixby for $100. This burying grounds, is what was to be know as East Cemetery and it may have been used before the date of sale. Eventually, 200 bodies were moved from the cemetery on East Ave. to the East Cemetery. The first grave sold in East Cem. was to Samuel Joy, who paid $5 for the plot. In the 1840's some of the graves in the East Cem. began being moved to the new Mt. Hope Cemetery. Even though graves were being moved out, new burials were made up until the 1860's. In 1872 the City of Rochester wanted to move the rest of the bodies and use the lot for a school, but had to get a Bill through the State Legislature before they could be moved. All the remaining bodies were moved in 1873. A newspaper article of that era stated that there was a book of plot owners and among the owners were the families: ELY, BUSH, DANFORTH, WHITNEY, COBB and SCOFIELD. A search has been made to find this book of plot owners but it must have been destroyed. Also in the newspaper article, it says that buried in East Cemetery is Rev. Comfort Williams of the First Presbyterian Church of Rochester, who died Aug. 26, 1825.

The following list contains the known burials in the East Cemetery. These records were collected from two main sources. First from a visit to the plot in Mt. Hope Cem. where some of the burials from East Cemetery now reside and the second source is from gleaning the records of Mount Hope which contain records of burials in many other old cemeteries. The record books in Mt. Hope give the date of burial, age, cause of death and place of residence (usually a street in Rochester). Some of these references even give the plot number in which the person was buried in the East Cemetery. Also added to this is some information from the old Rochester newspapers. There were many more persons that were buried in the East Cem. and were moved to family plots in Mt. Hope and other cemeteries. Unfortunately their names may never be known. Also not all the remaining stones can be read. An * is used when a letter or number can't be read.
