Mendon Cemetery

line

This cemetery is located on the east side of the Pittsford - Ionia Road in the hamlet of Mendon. It is also known as Baptist Hill Cemetery and east Mendon Cemetery.

This cemetery has had three records of tombstone inscriptions made before this. The first was most definately the best of the three. In 1890, Daniel Allen compiled a list from the records of interments and supplemented this with information from various other sources. His list also included the lot that the person was buried on. [Note: Potters Field referred to herein is the pauper's lot]. The second list was made in the mid 1920's by Mary T. Douglas. The third list was published in Nov. 1980 by Mr. & Mrs. Robert H. Dows and Mr. & Mrs. William Souve. This list was made by combining the old lists and then correcting and adding to it including more lot information. This list was compiled by Richard T. Halsey in October 1988 with corrections sent by Diane Ham, Mendon Historian, in 2005. A special thanks to Cheri Branca for the numerous corrections that she sent in 2011.

Introduction to 1890 edition

The Mendon Cemetery is located in the town of Mendon near the southeastern boundary of Monroe County. It is beautifully situated on the top of a high hill, from which one can look for miles in every direction; into Ontario County to the east and Livingston County to the south, while the ridge of hills several miles to the north cut off a view of Lake Ontario. At the foot of the hill runs the famous Irondequoit Creek, and on either bank nestles the little village of Mendon, while far up and down the valley may be seen some some of the richest lands to be found in the State of New York.

In the year 1825 the First Baptist Society of Mendon purchased a half acre of land adjoining their church to be used as a cemetery and in 1826 was properly laid out in lots. In 1867 it was duly incorporated by the State Legislature, its first trustees being Daniel Allen, Wm. S. Clark, Adams Miller, Ery Earls, N. N. Treat, and E. F. Park. Since that time three additions have been made to the grounds till at present they contain about four acres.

In July 1832, the cholera scourge visited the little hamlet being brought by a stage driver from Rochester. From July 24th to August 16th there were fourteen deaths: twelve of the victims were buried in the Mendon Cemetery and two on Taylor Street, the ratio of deaths to the number of inhabitants of the place being one to every fourteen. During this epidemic the greatest excitement prevailed throughout the community, and the people were frequently awakened at night by the sound of the workman's hammer upon the coffin of a victim who had probably been taken during the day previous.

It is barely possible that the readers of this pamphlet will realize the great amount of time, trouble, and expense it has cost Mr. Allen to collect the data herein contained. His research has been unrelenting, and in many cases he has written a score of letters to learn the facts concerning one interment in the Cemetery. In some instances he was referred from one surviving relative to another, and before the one was found who knew the facts concerning the death and burial of the party in question he had sent letters of inquiry to all points of the compass. Sometimes the facts were learned from an undertaker, again from a doctor, while the poormasters' reports in the town clerk's office brought to light others, and in a thousand and one ways he has worked till at least he is able to place the facts in a concise form before those interested in the Cemetery.

It is very interesting to hear him tell how he learned of this one's death and how he got at the facts concerning that one. In one case he found by looking through an old day-book of a merchant that such goods as are commonly used in making mourning and grave clothes were charged to the family of the deceased, and in following up this slight clue the desired facts were at last disclosed.

The date of one lady's death for a long time puzzled him; but finally he came into possession of a doctor's account-book dating back in the twenties, and from that he learned that the physician was attending the lady in question. For several days the visits were charged, while the last item simply read, "woman dead." In this instance the age could not be learned, but the date of death could be readily fixed.

It is hoped therefore that the time thus spent by Mr. Allen will be more fully appreciated by those who come into possession of this record from the few interesting instances cited. Almost the entire list of searches made could furnish a history in themselves, but lack of space forbids such mention.
