Quaker Cemetery--Town of Wheatland--Monroe County--New York State
Established 1833
On Quaker Road about 800 feet East of Bowerman Road and on the south side, next to the road.
The following is work done by Town Historian Florence Field and retyped by Howard Offen.
Records and genealogical notes from a Quaker Cemetery in Wheatland, NY
Supplied by Florence A. Field
Scottsville, NY
The Following are excerpts from "Early Rochester Family Records" by Anah Babcock Yates, originally published in the Post Express (Rochester NY) in 1911, with genealogical notes from the files of Edith Stokoe and Elbert H. T. Miller. The data are from gravestone inscriptions in the Quaker cemetery on Quaker Road in the Town of Wheatland, Scottsville, NY. There are no burial books, as such, for this cemetery and there are unmarked graves as was Quaker custom. It is believed that Mrs. Yates interviewed Thomas A. Stokoe in 1911 and obtained birth as well as death records from his knowledge. For burials after 1911 information was taken from monuments.
Florence Field says that "Edith Stokoe is a charming lady of 91 years who is my neighbor and who lives next door to the Quaker Cemetery." Many of her ancestors and relatives are buried there. In fact, [there is] an interesting little story about her great-grandmother whose husband was not a Quaker. The family farm bordered the cemetery and in order that the family should not be divided in burial, Mrs. Stokoe provided a strip of land at the side of the cemetery to be a burial plot for the Stokoes in case they were denied in the Quaker area. Today the east side of the cemetery is all Stokoe names as it comprises that strip which was so well provided for many years ago...
"The material attributed to her was given to me (Mrs. Field), written in long hand, from Edith's family records and her fine memory. I talked with her yesterday about you (me) and the newsletter (B/BFN) and she said you may use anything you like from her notes. She gave me the notes probably about three years ago..."
Data marked [*] are "from the 'Early Family Records' by Anna Babcock Yates, published in the defunct Rochester, NY Post Express newspaper somewhere between 1910 and 1913." Data marked [^] are from Edith Stokoe. Data marked [\] are "from records by Elbert H. T. Miller before 1921. I was loaned the book just last week as someone discovered it as it was about to be thrown out of a Miller Homestead which has been sold to someone who wanted to clean out the house. Elbert Miller was an unmarried man whose family was wealthy enough so that he never had to work. He was intrigued by genealogy and spent his time dabbling in it and writing up genealogies for local families who desired one. I find his records very accurate. The notebook is a hand written one and obviously was just a hobby type of thing with him. His family are long since dead as is he."
Dates are in da/mo/yr format and may have been converted from formats given on sheets provided to the news letter. Although I usually advocate reporting dates as they are provided, the following is a compilation of records from several sources and the use of several dating formats would be very confusing. Ages when given, constitute the age at death. Names joined by brackets may be assumed to be the same individual listed by two or more sources with slightly different names. Females are listed by their name at death and are cross referenced to their maiden names and other married names if known.

ADDITIONAL NOTES ON WHEATLAND NY QUAKER HISTORY
MADE BY EDITH STOKOE, submitted by Florence Field
Darius Shadbolt and his wife, Martha Weeks, were the parents of Thomas Shadbolt and the grandparents of Jennie Shadbolt and George Shadbolt (civil war veteran). These two were children of Samuel Shadbolt who is not buried here.
Thomas Shadbolt was the husband of Naomi Bassett. They had three daughters: (1) Amanda married Thomas Angus Stokoe, (2) Martha married Luther Bowerman, and (3) Phoebe died as a child.
Phoebe Shadbolt Cushman, wife of Abner, was a sister of Thomas Shadbolt and daughter of Darius. Marietta Bowerman was a daughter of Luther and Martha Bowerman and thus she is a granddaughter of Thomas Shadbolt on whose lot she is buried. Martha E. and George Edwin were the children of Abner and Phoebe Cushman. So was John Cushman a son of Abner and Phoebe.
The earliest Bowerman buried here is Joseph with his wife Alice Estes. Four of their children are buried here: (1) Luther, (2) Daniel, (3) Sarah (the wife of Abram Stokoe), and (4) Adeline (the wife of Martin Winslow).
Abram Stokoe and Thomas Angus Stokoe were brothers. Two sisters, Susan and Elizabeth are buried on Thomas' lot. Abrams' wife was Sarah Bowerman, sister of Luther. Thomas' wife was Amanda Shadbolt, sister of Martha Shadbolt who married Luther Bowerman.
On Abram's lot are buried his wife, a son Romeyn, another son, A. Milton Stokoe, and Miltons wife, Alice Pixley.
On Thomas Stokoe's lot are his wife's grave as well as the graves of his sisters, Elizabeth and Susan, his daughter Martha E., and his son George.
Next to his lot is that of his son, Charles H. Stokoe, and wife Mable Giles Stokoe. She was the daughter of Warren and Martha Giles, who are buried at the front of the cemetery.
On another lot is the grave of William L. Stokoe (another son of Thomas A.) his wife, Margaret Malloch Stokoe, two daughters, M. Winifred and Carrie A. Next to Carrie's grave is James Stafford Stokoe, a grandson of William and next to him is a stone erected for his father, William C. Stokoe, and his mother, Marie Stafford Stokoe. William L. Stokoe is father of William C., Edith, Hazel, Janet Isabel, and Evelyn.
Mrs. James L. Cox was Alice Stokoe, daughter of Abram Stokoe. Susie Cox and Harlow Romeyn Cox were their children. James, the veteran of the Patriot War, was the father of James L. Cox. I believe that Abbie Cox Bingham is buried just north of the veteran. She is his daughter and brother of James L.
William Rice, veteran of WWI, was a son-in-law of William L. Stokoe, husband of Janet Isabel Stokoe Rice.
The veteran James Cox was a cousin of Thomas Shadbolt. Their grandmothers, Anna Frost Shadbolt and Rhoda Frost (Cock) Cox were sisters.
