The description on this card is wrong. The Barge Canal never went through downtown. The aqueduct for the old Erie Canal was roofed over and created the Broad St. bridge. Below the highway was the Rochester subway in the old bed of the canal.

From the 1920s to the early 1950s the subway ran under the highway in the old Erie Canal bed of the Broad Street Bridge.
