George B. Selden
Inventor of the Automobile


George Selden 1871 George Baldwin Selden was born September 14, 1846 in Clarkson, NY. In 1859, his father, Judge Henry R. Selden, a prominent attorney, moved to Rochester, New York, where George briefly attended the University of Rochester before dropping out to enlist in the Army during the Civil War. George later attended Yale and graduated with a law degree. He passed the New York bar 1871 and joined his father's practice. He married shortly thereafter to Clara Drake Woodruff, by whom he had 4 children (Louise, Clara, Henry and George). Picture to the right shows George Selden in 1871.
