The Towns and Villages of Monroe Co., NY

This page describes the formation of the Towns and Villages of Monroe Co., NY. As the County grew the original towns were cut into smaller towns and names were changed. It is important to note that in New York State, a Town is a division of the County. A Village is an incorporated area within a town. In the case of East Rochester, it originally overlapped two towns. East Rochester also was the last town formed.

Formation of Towns
Boyle Originally formed the Town of Northfield. April 6, 1796. Name changed to Boyle, April 6, 1808. Penfield taken off in 1810. Perinton taken off in 1812. Name changed to Smallwood, March 25, 1813. Smallwood was split March 25, 1814 into the Towns of Brighton and Pittsford.
Brighton Formed from Smallwood, March 25, 1814. Irondequoit taken off in 1839.
Chili Formed from Riga, Feb. 22, 1822.
Clarkson Formed from Murray (now Orleans Co.), April 2, 1819. Hamlin was taken off in 1852.
East Rochester  Incorporated as a Village, half in the Town of Perinton and the other half in the Town of Pittsford on Oct. 18, 1906. Became a Town with the same boundaries, Jan. 1, 1981.
Gates Formed March 30, 1802 as the Town of Northampton. Parma and Riga were taken off in 1808. Name was changed, June 10, 1812 to Gates. Greece was taken off in 1822.
Greece Formed from Gates, March 22, 1822.
Hamlin Formed from Clarkson, Oct. 11, 1852 as the Town of Union. Name changed to Hamlin, Feb. 28, 1861.
Henrietta Formed from Pittsford, March 27, 1818.

Irondequoit Formed from Brighton, March 27, 1839.
Mendon Formed from Bloomfield, Ontario Co., May 26, 1812.

Ogden Formed from Parma, Jan. 27, 1817.
Parma Formed from Northampton, Apr. 8, 1808.
Penfield Formed from Boyle, March 30, 1810. Webster taken off in 1840.
Perinton Formed from Boyle, May 26, 1812.
Pittsford Formed from Smallwood, March 25, 1814. Henrietta taken off in 1818.
Riga Formed from Northampton, April 8, 1808. Chili taken off in 1822.
Rush Formed from Avon (now Livingston Co.), March 13, 1818.

Sweden Formed from Murray (now Orleans Co.), April 2, 1813.
Union See Hamlin.
Webster Formed from Penfield, Feb. 6, 1840.
Wheatland Formed from Caledonia (now Livingston Co.) as the Town of Inverness, Feb. 23, 1821. Name changed to Wheatland, April 3, 1821.

Formation of Villages (and City of Rochester)
Brighton Incorporated as a Village in the Town of Brighton in 1885. Annexed by the City of Rochester in 1905.
Brockport In the Town of Sweden. Incorporated as a Village, Apr. 26, 1829.
Charlotte Incorporated as a Village in the Town of Greece, June 24, 1869. Annexed by the City of Rochester in 1916.
Churchville In the Town of Riga. Incorporated as a Village, March 7, 1855.

Fairport In the Town of Perinton. Incorporated as a Village, April 12, 1867.
Hilton In the Town of Parma. Incorporated as the Village of North Parma, July 28, 1885. Name changed to Hilton, April 17, 1896.
Honeoye Falls In the Town of Mendon. Incorporated as a Village, April 12, 1833.
Pittsford In the Town of Pittsford. Incorporated as a Village, April 7, 1827.
Rochester Incorporated as the Village of Rochesterville, March 21, 1817. Name changed to Rochester, April 12, 1822. Incorporated as a City, April 28, 1834 and has been enlarged many times since then.
Scottsville In the Town of Wheatland. Incorporated as a Village, Oct. 16, 1914.
Spencerport In the Town of Ogden. Incorporated as a Village, April 22, 1867.
Webster In the Town of Webster. Incorporated as a Village, Apr. 26, 1905.
