Back to Mt. Hope Introduction
![]()
This is a list of the burials in the Civil War lot (also called the G.A.R. lot) of Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rochester, New York. It is important to note that there are many more Civil War veterans in family plots in the rest of this cemetery than there are in this lot. Also, even though this is the Civil War lot, there are two burials from the War of 1812 and a few burials with birth dates after the Civil War.
The records on this page came from two sources. The first source are books that were kept by the Monroe County Veteran's Service Agency in order to locate graves and be able to place flags on the veteran's grave. Each book contains many small forms with data on each veteran burial. There is varying amounts of data on the veteran on these forms. Whatever information is listed on the form is included on this page.
The "Division" block on the form was used by the veteran's organization as a method of separating the County into sections for those placing flags.
The second source of information is from the tombstones in the lot. They were copied by Richard T. Halsey between 5 July and 11 July, 1999. When the information from the Vets Agency form and the tombstone records differ, or more information is added, the tombstone information is included in red.
The map for the Civil War lot has red dots indicating occupied graves.
Military tombstones use some abbreviations that you may not be familiar with. This table will be of help in understanding the unit that the man was in:
