St. Patrick's Church was founded April 29, 1822. At first members of the Church were buried in a small ground behind the Church. In May of 1827 there was a request to the Village of Rochester to have the bodies removed from that small cemetery. In June 1827 the Church accepted an offer of 60 lots in the southwest corner of West Cemetery. The bodies were probably moved soon after and the Church would have used West Cemetery for several years. In 1837 Rochester offered to sell 5 acres to the Church in the new Mt. Hope Cemetery. Instead, in 1838 a 21 acre lot was bought that included most of Pinnacle Hill. Thus, this cemetery is sometimes referred to as Pinnacle Cemetery. The rate of burials at St. Patrick's Cemetery decreased after Holy Sepulchre Cemetery was opened in 1872. Still burials in family owned lots continued even though the Cemetery started to become overgrown. The last burial in the cemetery was on Dec. 4, 1900, but the name of the person is not known. There were probably a total of 5,000 bodies buried in St. Patrick's. Some bodies were moved to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery as early 1872. It wasn't until 1935 that the remaining 4769 bodies were dug up and moved to Holy Sepulchre. Photos in the newspaper show a steam-shovel being used to scrape the top layer of dirt off the graves. Of those graves dug up in 1935, about 30% were identified by lead name plates on the caskets. Family members could claim the body and a small percentage were re-interred in family plots in Holy Sepulchre. The rest of the bodies were buried in a lot in Holy Sepulchre which does not have any tombstones on it except one memorial (see next page).
Rumors were that some tombstones still remained in the old lot on Pinnacle Hill. Found on the north side of the hill were many bases of stones and two tombstones. On one stone all that could be read was that the person died age 72. The other stone was a rather large one for Eleanor Greeno. It appears to have been rolled down the hill (see photo). In 2021 another tombstone was found at the base of the south side of Pinnacle hill. That was the tombstone for Antonette Huck who died in 1859. It too appears to have slide down the hill. The fate of the other tombstones is not known.
Ulysses McCarthy died March 10, 1873. He was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery as he did not like Holy Sepulchre. He also told his son, John, that he did not want to ever be moved to Holy Sepulchre. In 1935 when the remaining graves were moved to Holy Sepulchre there was no family left that even knew were Uylsses was buried so he also was moved to the lot in Holy Sepulchre.
The records included in this list come from many sources. A source for early records is the burial records of Mt. Hope Cemetery (reference [1]), the Rochester public cemetery. For the years 1838 - 1852 the records were used to record all burials in the City of Rochester including St. Patrick's Cemetery. The Mt. Hope records give records of burial date, age, cause of death and residence.
In the Rochester Union & Advertiser of May 31, 1873 and May 30, 1892 were lists of Civil War Veterans buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Also various newspaper articles through the years had the names of other persons buried in the Cemetery.
The earliest records of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery included some removals from St. Patrick's Cemetery (reference [3]).
In March 2001 Mary Walters discovered that there are a few deaths for 1832 recorded in the middle of the baptism records of St. Patrick's Church (reference [4]. These records were probably recorded by Father John F. McGerry even though he refers to himself in the records. Some of the same people in the Church records are included in a list of Cholera deaths from 1832 with sometimes different ages and spellings of names. In 1832 St. Patrick's Church was burying members in a dedicated lot of West Cemetery. It is not sure if when that cemetery was closed that those buried there were moved to the St. Patrick's Cemetery on Pinnacle Hill or to Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Someone whose name was not recorded sent a list of burials in St. Patrick's that were extracted from the Day Books of Mt. Hope Cemetery (reference [2]). Most of those match the burial books but there were some that were not in the Mt. Hope burial books.
There are two books of interments in the cemetery that are at the Archives of the Diocese of Rochester. The first book starts in November 1864. It is not exactly sure what the recorded dates in that book are. They are not burial dates as they are not in date order. They are either death dates or dates when the burial was paid for as a dollar amount is also recorded. It seems more likely that those dates are death dates but some of the dates don't match death dates noted in local newspapers. The first book of interments goes up to September 1871. The second book of interments has records from Sept. 1871 to Oct. 1876. Then the interments continue in a back section in book one. Those finally end on Nov. 6, 1888.
There are three sets of records relating to those burials that were identified during the removal in 1935. First is a book at the Archives of the Diocese of Rochester (reference [6]). It lists names, ages and removals dates to Holy Sepulchre. For some unknown reason it only has surnames from A to K. The next set of records are 4 small books of slips (reference [7]) that are like daily work sheets. The slips note the date of removal and any identifying information. Those slips show that most of burials dug up are of unknown persons. Some slips note that the person was identified by a lead nameplate on the coffin or an even smaller amount by a headstone. Last is that many of removals, but not all, from 1935 show on the online database of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (reference [8]). Some of those removed in 1935 show on just one of those sources, while some show on all three.
Th aerial map, above, shows where St. Patrick's Cemetery was located on the corner of Field Street and S. Clinton Ave. West of the dotted line was in the City of Rochester. There is a lot map from 1852 of the portion of the cemetery within Rochester. The eastern part of the cemetery was in the Town of Brighton. The St. Patrick's lot in Holy Sepulchre does not show on the map of that cemetery. It is located on a strip of land between Sections M & K and Sections 2 & 3 North. The GAR lot where most of the Civil War veterans ended up is also not on the map. It is in the northeast corner of Section L.
