George Selden

Notes: George Baldwin Selden was born September 14, 1846 in Clarkson, NY. In 1859, his father, Judge Henry R. Selden, a prominent attorney, moved to Rochester, New York, where George briefly attended the University of Rochester before dropping out to enlist in the Army during the Civil War. George later attended Yale and graduated with a law degree. He passed the New York bar 1871 and joined his father's practice. He married shortly thereafter to Clara Drake Woodruff, by whom he had 4 children (Louise, Clara, Henry and George).

Selden had an interest in the early development of the automobile and 2 cycle auto engine developed by George Brayton. On May 8, 1879 Selden filed a patent for his "road engine" which inclded an engine similar to Brayton's. The patent laws of that day allowed you to pre-date the patent so that his invention is listed as being made in 1877. The patent laws also allowed for updates to be made within a two year period so by sending in changes to his patent.
