This page describes the formation of the Towns and Villages of Monroe Co., NY. As the County grew the original towns were cut into smaller towns and names were changed. It is important to note that in New York State, a Town is a division of the County. A Village is an incorporated area within a town. In the case of East Rochester, it originally overlapped two towns. East Rochester also was the last town formed.

| Boyle | Originally formed the Town of Northfield. April 6, 1796. Name changed to Boyle, April 6, 1808. Penfield taken off in 1810. Perinton taken off in 1812. Name changed to Smallwood, March 25, 1813. Smallwood was split March 25, 1814 into the Towns of Brighton and Pittsford. |

| East Rochester | Incorporated as a Village, half in the Town of Perinton and the other half in the Town of Pittsford on Oct. 18, 1906. Became a Town with the same boundaries, Jan. 1, 1981. |
| Gates | Formed March 30, 1802 as the Town of Northampton. Parma and Riga were taken off in 1808. Name was changed, June 10, 1812 to Gates. Greece was taken off in 1822. |

| Hamlin | Formed from Clarkson, Oct. 11, 1852 as the Town of Union. Name changed to Hamlin, Feb. 28, 1861. |

| Rochester | Incorporated as the Village of Rochesterville, March 21, 1817. Name changed to Rochester, April 12, 1822. Incorporated as a City, April 28, 1834 and has been enlarged many times since then. |
