Doctor Abdiel Bliss Carpenter came to Greece, NY in the late 1820s. In 1832 he took over the practise of another doctor. He practised medicine until 1865 when his son, Dr. Abdiel Milton Carpenter, took over the practise.
Doctor Carpenter lived on Latta Road, east of North Greece Road. His home still exists at 3490 Latta Road. His patients would have lived in the northern part of the Towns of Greece and Parma.
Doctor Carpenter left three day books which are now housed in the Edward G. Miner Library in Strong Hospital. Most of day books contain expenses for his farm. In the back of each of the day books were recorded births that he attended. The records therein are extracted from those day books. The birth records only have the date of birth, the name of the mother, and columns for boys and girls. There are records of the births of some twins and and also two sets of triplets.
One page of records must be missing as there is a gap of births between Oct. 1853 and Dec. 1854. You can see that the last few years of his career he did slow down as he attended less number of births. Remember that a doctor may not have attended every birth so a family may not have every birth recorded. Then there are children recorded that appear not to be in online family trees. Those children probably died young.
The first four columns are from Dr. Carpenter's records. The last column has some genealogical clues gleaned mostly from census records related to the births. These should be used as a starting point for your family research. Jo Ann Ward Snyder has given some references for the maiden names of some of mothers. Those are noted as footnotes (in red). Use this table for a description of the sources:
