These records came from a set of volumes of court records found in the Monroe County Courthouse called "Miscellaneous Records." As the name implies there are many kinds of records included including these records of people doing legal name changes. These are records of those that went to Court to legally have their names changed. Many more people just assumed a new name without bothering to go to Court. You will see that only some are immigrants wanting more American names. You didn't have to give the Court a reason for changing you're name and the process was rather simple. You went to Court to apply for a new name. The Court instruct you to publish a notice in a newspaper with your current name and the name you are assuming. As long as no one protested, (and that never happened) the Court would give you a date that the new name would take effect.
