Marriages and Deaths from Rochester Newspapers
Jan. 1, 1832 - June 30, 1832

line

Vital records in New York State weren't recorded by the state until 1880. For early vital records you have to either find church records or hope that the event is recorded in the newspaper. For the time period of this page, there were these newspapers published in Rochester:

  1. Rochester Daily Advertiser was published from April 5, 1830 to Dec. 12, 1856. Rochester Public Library has microfilms that include the year 1832.
  2. Rochester Observer (religious; weekly) was published from Jan. 6, 1827 - 1832. Rochester Public Library has a microfilm for the entire run.
  3. Rochester Republican (weekly) was published Aug. 7, 1827 - Aug. 27, 1884. This was the weekly newspaper that was published by the same office as the Rochester Daily Advertiser so it has many of the same records. Rochester Public Library has microfilms that includes the year 1832.
  4. Anti-Masonic Enquirer (weekly) was published from Feb. 12, 1828 to Feb. 1834. The Rochester Public Library has a microfilm that covers the year 1832. Note also that the masthead only says The Inquirer but the name is still Anti-Masonic Enquirer on the other pages..
  5. The Gem (semi-monthly) was published 1829 - 1843. For the dates of Jan. 2, 1832 to April 28, 1832 it is titled The Mirror, A Semi-Monthly Literary and Miscellaneous Journal. They then apologize for changing the name and go back to The Rochester Gem. The Rochester Public Library has the issues for 1832 in a bound volume.
  6. The National Republican was published from May or June 1831 to 1834. No existing copies are located in the Rochester area.

The records on this page are extracted as published in the newspaper. Small monthly calendars are included to help when a newspaper record states that an event happened "last week Thursday."

You may wonder about birth records. Except for a few rare birth notices, birth records were not published until the mid twentieth century.

Two abbreviations that appear frequently in these old records are; inst. and ult. Their meanings are inst. = instant, an old word meaning this month and ult. = ultimo meaning last month.

A few plain facts.

Geo. Waterman, a son of Mr. Daniel Waterman, an apprentice to me in the Tin Ware making business, left my employ on Sunday evening 22d inst. without my knowledge or consent. Said George by and with the consent of his father, and agreed to continue with me for and during the full term of four years from the 8th day of June 1830; but after staying about 18 months, and just beginning to be of some benefit to me, and also receiving from me enough to clothe himself equal to any person in the village, has, without any kind of provocation, or even so much as expressing one word of dissatisfaction, runaway! — notwithstanding, when he first commenced with me, he said he Hoped he had honor enough to do as he agreed, without being bound by written indentures. This, therefore is to notify those who would employ him, that he is not to be depended on.

They arrived at Quebec in June last, and went thence to Montreal. A the 28th of June, Patrick Grahin, jr. the eldest son, left Montreal with the intention of going to Rochester, N. At Orangville, Jan. 29 Mrs. Roley Smith, aged 39, In the death of Mrs. S. the church, as well as her family, has sustained a loss. Yet, as she lived in the confident expectation of a blessed immortality, and died, it is believed in the Lord; her friends have the consoling hope that their loss was her gain. She firmly believed on the necessity of Regeneration, and ascribed the work of grace on the heart, entirely to the Holy Spirit and she lived to witness, in the late revival, the sovereign power of that Spirit, and his sanctifying effect in a new gracious reformation of some of her own family. Her own salvation she ascribed wholly to the grace of God. In Christ was her only hope. "Sweet Jesus," were her last words as she fell asleep, to be awaked only by the archangel's trump.—Com.

ORDINATION.

At Orangville, Genesee County, N. Y. on the 17th inst., Mr. John Gray was ordained to the work of the gospel ministry, having been for the year previously a licentiate of the Presbytery of Genesee. The ordination sermon by Rev. Geo. Colton. The consecrating prayer by Rev. Dr. Hunter; and the charge to the candidate by Rev. Benjamin I. Lane. Mr. Gray was not installed over any particular congregation. He designs to labor as an Evangelist for life. The calls for his services in the ministry were so numerous, and the Presbytery had much proof of his zeal, and discretion, that they felt they were called on in divine Providence to set him apart by prayer and laying on of the hands of the Presbytery. The exercises were solemn and appropriate, and deep interest apparently felt that Mr. G. might be the honored instrument of winning multitudes of souls to the Lord Jesus Christ.

LOST BOY. — In the month of August last, a boy name William Williams, living with his brother-in-law, Aaron Warner, in Murray, having attended a meeting one evening some distance from home, stayed over night with a friend. — He got up early the next morning and left for home, since which he has not been heard of. His friends made some search for him, but as he was not to be found, concluded he must have gone to his mother's in Canada. They wrote to her and requested immediate information if he was not there. His mother wrote back that he was not with her; but the letter was not received, and Mr. Warner supposing the boy to be in Canada, made no further inquiry on the subject. Mrs. W., hearing nothing more, concluded that he had returned to his brother-in-law. — They were not undeceived until the arrival of a brother last week from Canada, who brought the painful intelligence that the boy was not there, Mrs. Williams, has arrived in Murray, and feeling all a mother's anxiety for a lost child, solicits the assistance of the friends of humanity in her endeavors to ascertain the fate of her son. He was 14 years old—had light hair and complexion—light blue eyes, and was tall for his age. His fate is wrapped in mystery. He was so steady and so much attached to home as almost to forbid the idea that he could have ranaway. Before leaving the house, where he stayed over night, in the morning, he complained illness—of pain in his bones—and the probability is that on his way home his fever increased to such a degree as to render him incapable of directing his course, and that he wandered into the woods which he had to pass, and died there. His mother will remain at Murray until the snow disappears and the woods have been thoroughly searched. In the mean time she will be truly grateful for any information of her son, which may be communicated to Cynthia Williams, Murray, or Justice W. Williams, East Flamborough, U. C.

DIED,

At the village of Waterboro (Ellicott) in this County. on Sunday morning the 3d inst. Mrs. Sybil consort of Dea. Samuel Foote of this village, aged 56 years. She was a native of Hindel, N. H. but for the last 35 years a resident of this state. Her last illness was short, during which not a murmur escaped her lips, and a while she spoke freely of the prospects of her resolution, a joy, resignation and peace was manifested in her language and countenance which showed the triumph of the religion which she professed and practised from her younger years. In her death a husband is deprived of an affectionate and dutiful wife, children of advice council and example of a fond teacher, the Church of an active member and who contended earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints, and the neighborhood, the poor and depressed of one to whom they never looked in vain. She has left a husband, mother and eight children besides other relatives and a numerous circle of friends to mourn her loss. But the life she loved as well as the last scene seemed to speak "I know that my Redeemer liveth." — Chau. Republican.

At Bergen on the 14th inst. by Rev. G. W. Elliott, Mr. Cleophas Seley, to Miss Nancy Parish, both of Riga. Also Mr. William Hubbard to Miss Clarissa Wright, both of Riga.

DIED,

At the residence of her brother-in-law, James M'Nair Esq. in Sparta, March 12th, Miss Phebe M'Nair, aged 24, youngest daughter of Hugh M'Nair Esq. formerly of Canandaigua.

To extol the dead is often to flatter the living and the estimate made of departed friends, by human partiality, often varies from strict justice. Yet a faithful exhibition of departed worth may excite to duty; while it sooths the anguish of the deeply wounded spirit, to think the friend we lament deserved our kind remembrance.

It is not known that Miss M'Nair, either in her own or her friends estimation, exhibited any thing of the splendid, the brilliant or the dazzling; but she was kind, affectionate and amiable, full of life and spirits, with a heart forinea for all the gentle sympathies of our nature. Several years before her death, when almost none of the youth around her loved the ways of piety, she made a profession of religion; and those who knew her saw evidence that her spirit was chastened, and her heart subdued, by the grace of the gospel.

In the near prospect of death, she reviewed her life, and searched her heart, and saw most clearly that she was herself, sinful, destitute and helpless. Her great desire evidently was, to be wholly rid of self. trust wholly in Christ, and be wholly resigned to the will of God. The promises of the gospel were presented, and she appeared evidently to embrace them. She often uttered expressions like the following. "In my past life, I cannot see a single good act." "I am full of sin." "How lust would it be for God to condemn me." "I know that Christ is able, and he is willing. He is a precious Saviour; I am afraid only of my own heart." "God is good in taking me away instead of others. I can be better spared."— " Death has no terrors; nor the grave," She sometimes expressed a wish to live is she might redeem time and be useful; but cheerfully committed herself to her Heavenly Father.

Her death bed scene was calculated to remind us to double our diligence and redeem our time, while we have opportunity; last in the near prospect of death we see much to regret and to be-wail. It shows us also that deep convictions of sin, with strong faith in Christ and submission to the will of God, are the ground work of true peace. In her case, we see that true religious will enable the immortal spirit, yet young, and springing forth with joyous hope of much good on earth, without fear, and smile with cheerful hope, where the unbeliever trembles and despair.

In Yates, Orleans co., on the 30th ult. Mrs. Ann V. A. Tappan, wife of Samuel Tappan Esq. She had put her trust in her Saviour, and He comforted and supported her in the trying hour.

DIED,

At Ogden on the 2d of April, Mrs. Amanda Church, wife of Deacon Charles Church in the 25th year of her age. Rarely has the power of religion and the grace of God been more strikingly displayed, than in the last hours of this lamented individual. To her death had no terrors, He, the Son of man came at an hour when she and her friends were little expecting him, yet she was ready to welcome his approach. When informed that her her was nigh, she was not agitated, but with the greatest composure, commended her soul in an audible prayer to the mercy of the Saviour, and cheerfully resigned her husband and family into his hands. To each of them she gave her parting counsel and benediction and final farewell without a tear. Soon her whole soul seemed to be filled with the love of Christ and wrapt in visions of the heavenly world. — Her "tongue broke out in unknown strains." She could find no language to describe the glory and preciousness of her Saviour, or her own emotions. — She longed to depart that she might catch the "higher notice of the Redeemed in Heaven. Her soul struggled to break from its prison of clay and spread its pinions for that blessed world. — "Come Lord Jesus, come quickly," was her language. " Why move thy chariot wheels so slowly." Those who were permitted to witness the scene, can testify that it was one of peculiar glory. "quite in the verge of Heaven." — (Communicated.)

CORONER'S INQUEST.

The body of Mrs. Gale, wife of Mr. T. D. Gale, of this village, was found in Johnson's Mill Race, at half past one o'clock this day. The evidence before the jury was, that Mrs. Gale had been absent from home about two months and returned last evening, about nine o'clock, on board a canal boat, which she left at Exchange street bridge, to find a friend of hers in Buffalo street; but not finding him, it is supposed she attempted to go home alone. Owing to the darkness of the night she lost her way. and either fell through some of the holes in the covering of the race, or walked directly off into that part of it that is not covered, a little north of the aqueduct. Verdict of the jury, accidental drowning. Saturday evening, April 28, 1832.

On the 11th inst. Harruet Atwood, daughter of Col. James Clark, East Bethany, formerly of Lebanon, Ct. aged seventeen years, of pulmonary consumption. Her decline was rapid and the last struggle short. She appeared to be entirely weaned from the world and during her sickness manifested much resignation to the Divine will and unshaken love of her Saviour. While languishing and a few moments before her spirit took its flight she manifested and expressed a humble hope that through the merits of Jesus Christ, she might be permitted to occupy some humble seat in his kingdom. She was hopefully made the subject of renewing grace with many others in a protracted meeting held in East Bethany, Feb. 1831.

The eldest daughter Wealthy, died of the same complaint on the 23d Sept. last aged 24 years. She died longing to be gone and be with her blessed Saviour. Also, on the 3d day of July last Parnel, the wife of Col. Clark, hoping in the mercy of God through the blessed Redeemer. Thus in a little more than 10 months this family have been called to mourn the loss of three of their number, but not as those who have hope.

DIED.

In Ogden, on the 8th inst. Dr. John Cobb, aged forty two years. For fourteen years Dr. C. enjoyed an extensive practice in his profession and as a physician as well as a member of society, was highly esteemed. His loss will be deeply and widely felt. He ever maintained a fair moral character, and gave to religious institutions his countenance and support. In the cause of Temperance he enlisted with all his heart, and was among the earliest and boldest and most successful advocates for 'total abstinence' in the place where he resided. His religious history is short. It was not until about a year before his death that he was brought under the transforming influence of the gospel. Though strictly moral in his life before, the change in him was great and apparent to all. The work of grace in his heart seemed to be deep and thorough. He commenced immediately the discharge of christian duties–consecrated his household to God, and exhorted his impenitent friends to repent and believe the gospel. He embraced the earliest opportunity of professing Christ before men, by uniting with the Congregational Church in this place, of which he remained an active and useful member, until he was called to join the church triumphant on high.

About five years ago he removed from Genoa, Cayuga co. to his late residence, and in that short time, by his upright and manly conduct had conciliated the universal friendship and respect of all with whom he was acquainted.—Communicated.
