Marriages and Deaths from Rochester Newspapers
July 1, 1833 - Dec. 31, 1833

line

Vital records in New York State weren't recorded by the state until 1880. For early vital records you have to either find church records or hope that the event is recorded in the newspaper. For the time period of this page, there were these newspapers published in Rochester:

  1. Rochester Daily Advertiser was published from April 5, 1830 to Dec. 12, 1856. Rochester Public Library has a microfilm covering Oct. 1 - Dec. 31, 1833.
  2. Rochester Republican (weekly) was published Aug. 7, 1827 - Aug. 27, 1884. This was the weekly newspaper that was published by the same office as the Rochester Daily Advertiser so it has many of the same records. There are no known copies of this newspaper for the year 1833
  3. Anti-Masonic Inquirer (weekly) was published from Feb. 12, 1828 to Feb. 1834. The Rochester Public Library has a microfilm that covers the year 1833. Note also that for the early years of publication it was titled Anti-Masonic Enquirer.
  4. The Rochester Gem (semi-monthly) was published 1829 - 1843. The volume for 1833 is online from the Rochester Public Library.
  5. The National Republican was published from May or June 1831 to 1834. No existing copies are located in the Rochester area.
  6. The Liberal Advocate was published from July 3, 1832 to at least July 1834. No existing copies for 1833 are located in the Rochester area.
  7. Rochester Daily Democrat was published from Jan. 1833 - 1870. No copies for 1833 exist.
  8. Family Journal, and Christian Philanthropist (weekly, religious) was published from Aug. 1833 to probably 1834. All existing copies are available online from the Rochester Public Library.

The records on this page are extracted as published in the newspaper. Small monthly calendars are included to help when a newspaper record states that an event happened "last week Thursday."

You may wonder about birth records. Except for a few rare birth notices, birth records were not published until the mid twentieth century.

Two abbreviations that appear frequently in these old records are; inst. and ult. Their meanings are inst. = instant, an old word meaning this month and ult. = ultimo meaning last month.

There are three death notices for Mary Jemison, called "the White Woman of the Genesee." The longest article contains biographical information that is almost completely wrong. See the entry on Wikipedia for correct information on her life.

Stop Thief

A man about 20 years old, calling himself George W. Bronson, sometimes George Bronson, stole from the subscriber in Woolcott, Wayne county, on Wednesday night last, a HORSE. I pursued the thief to Sodus, where he exchanged with Enoch Turner. he there got a dark brown Mare, thin in flesh, small size bob tail, and a piece of a buffalo skin on which he rides. I pursued the thief from there to Pittsford, where he was seen on Friday, where I lost his track. The thief is a slim, tallish like man, dark complexion, downish look, and sailor like gait. He is fond of bragging and boasting of running horses, and telling about winning large bets &c. My object is to detect the thief. I hope every citizen will keep a look out and secure said thief and property found with him, that he may be dealt with according to law.

Printers will confer a favor by publsihing the above.

DIED — In Pittsford, on Tuesday the 5h inst. Miss Roxa Ann Terry, aged 21 years. Miss T., early sought and obtained "the pearl of great price," and although the Son of Man came in an hour when she thought not, yet he found her with "lamp trimmed and burning." She was confined with sickness but one day, which she employed in exhorting all who came to see her to prepare to meet their God. In her death a large circle of friends are called to mourn, but more especially the church to which she belonged, but they "mourn not as those without hope," for she had lived the life of the righteous, and died, shouting "salvation to Him who had redeemed her, and washed her in his own blood."

With songs let us follow her flight,

And mount with her spirit above,

Escaped to the mansions of light,

And lodg'd in the Eden of love.

Mary Jemison

Died, at Seneca Village, N. Y. on the 19th ult., in the 91st year of age. In recording the demise of this individual, it will not at this time, be out of place to give a brief account of her life. She was born in 1742, in one of the eastern states, and when but two years old, we believe, her parents, feeling that general enterprise which grows in the bosom of Yankees, emigrated to the western part of the sate of New York, and located near the new village of Canandaigua. In 1754, when turmoils, the difficulties, and all the cruelties of war, generated by, and kept in horrid commotion between the Red men of the forest and the settlers of the West, she was, after her near relatives were destroyed by the Indians, according to the general usages in the Indian warfare, taken prisoner. She underwent more severity — witnessed more horror, endured manfully the ravages of war and the hard fare of the savage life, better, and with more fortitude, than perhaps, any other individual we have ever heard or read of. She was called the beautiful, pretty squaw, and the Sachem of the tribe, a few years after her capture, married her in the Indian form — at which time she had four sons who died in "single combat" we believe, with each other, and has left two well educated daughters to inherit the rich legacy she received from her indian friends and the Grand Sachem of the tribe. Mrs. Jemison, notwithstanding the earnest and frequent entreaties, of her friends, could never be persuaded to leave the red man's home, and she continued with them to the day of her death. She has left an immense property on the borders of the Genesee river, amounting we believe, to ten or fifteen thousand acres of the most fertile land, a great part of which is under good cultivation.

LOST BOY.

On Thursday the 23d inst. my son William Frazer, a lad about six years old, strayed away from the Rail Road Tavern, on the East side of the River, and has not since been seen or heard from. He had on a dark colored fustian jacket and pantaloons — no hat on his head — his hair is nearly white — greyish eyes — rather stout — no particular marks remembered. — Being a stranger in the village, (having just arrived here,) his father is apprehensive that he has fallen into the River or Race, and is very anxious on his account. Any information respecting him will be gratefully received. Persons knowing any thing of him will confer a signal favor by leaving word at the Daily Advertiser Office or at the Rail Road Tavern.

O take her but be faithful still,

And may the bridal vow

Be sacred held in after years,

And warmly breathed as now.

Remember, that's no common tie

That binds y our youthful heart;

'Tis only one that love can weave,

And only Death can part.

The joys of childhood's happy hours,

The home of riper years,

The treasur'd scenes of early youth.

In sunshine and in tears;

The purest hopes her bosom knew,

When her young heart was free,

All these and more she now resigns,

To brave the world with thee.

Her lot in life is fixed with thine,

Its good and ills to share,

And well I know 'twill be ger pride,

To soothe each sorrow there;

Then take her, and make fleeting time

Marck only joys increase,

And may your days glide sweetly on

In happiness and peace.
