Marriages and Deaths from Rochester Newspapers
July 1, 1840 - Dec. 31, 1840

line

Vital records in New York State weren't recorded by the state until 1880. For early vital records you have to either find church records or hope that the event is recorded in the newspaper. For the time period of this page, there were these newspapers published in Rochester:

  1. Rochester Daily Advertiser was published from April 5, 1830 to Dec. 12, 1856. The Rochester Public Library has a microfilm that has most of the papers for this six months.
  2. Rochester Republican (weekly) was published Aug. 7, 1827 - Aug. 27, 1884. The Rochester Public Library has a microfilm that has most of the issues for this six months. This was the weekly newspaper that was published by the same office as the Rochester Daily Advertiser so it has many of the same records. Only records included on this page are ones that are not found in the Rochester Daily Advertiser.
  3. The Rochester Gem (semi-monthly) was published 1829 - 1843. The Rochester Public Library has the volume for 1840 online. It appears that this newspaper shared records found in the Rochester Daily Democrat so only records not found in the Rochester Daily Democrat are included on this page.
  4. Rochester Daily Democrat was published from Jan. 1833 - 1870. The Rochester Public Library has a microfilm for this six months. About a third of the issues are missing from this time period.
  5. Monroe Democrat (weekly) was published from Feb. 1834 to 1857. There are no known existing copies of this newspaper.
  6. The Evening Advocate (daily) was published from April 1, 1840 to sometime in 1841 but none of those issues exist.

The records on this page are extracted as published in the newspaper. Small monthly calendars are included to help when a newspaper record states that an event happened "last week Thursday."

You may wonder about birth records. Except for a few rare birth notices, birth records were not published until the mid twentieth century.

Two abbreviations that appear frequently in these old records are; inst. and ult. Their meanings are inst. = instant, an old word meaning this month and ult. = ultimo meaning last month.

Reported for the Democrat
POLICE REPORTS
Justice Warner, Presiding
July 4.

This was a great day at the police office, The Evil One seemed to have been let loose, and insinuated himself into every quart of alcohol that was poured down the throats of his disciples. We will allow this is a day of rejoicing; but should this rejoicing be manifested in riot? In a surrender of reason, God's noblest gift, upon the polluted and polluting altar of intemperance? On this day, more than other, the freeman is reminded of a birth-right that tends to raise him in the scale of intellectual existence. Why, then, should he descend from his glorious elevation, and become the mere slave of low proportions? We can assign no reason, unless it be that he is unable to appreciate the blessing conferred upon him.

Jane Doe was found drunk in the street, with a child in her arms, Taken care of.

Francis Bombard was knocked over by the 4th of July. Agreed to leave city within twenty-four hours. On these conditions he was released.

Hugh Green was brought up on charge of assault and battery on Warren Bradshaw. Held to bail.

Thomas Jones, another assault and battery case. This gentleman thumped Mr. Kelly. Settled.

John C. Butler was brought up for assisting a prisoner to escape from Constable Wilkinson, Held to bail.

Hyat Wargram, assault on Wm. Jones. Discharged.

Chas. Seymour, assault and battery of his wife. Found guilty, and sentenced to pay $5 fine and stand committed until paid.

Jane Sisson was arraigned for stealing a purse and money of Mrs. Beardsley. Found guilty, and fined $5, to stand committed until paid.

THE GRAND COLLECTION OF BEASTS AND BIRDS, late of New York City Zoological Institute, will be EXHIBITED AT ROCHESTER, SATURDAY the 1st, and MONDAY the 3d day of August, next, 1840.

Shortly after shipping it died, the Proprietors sustaining a loss of $15,000. But the animal being so extremely fit and full grown, it was thought proper it should be preserved in the most perfect and natural way, which renders this grand display of the natural curiosity still so attracted and complete.

The perfectly cool and collected manner in which he enters and maintains throughout is unequaled in the known world, and excepting the celebrated Van Amburge, who has astonished all Europe in this most daring and Unaccountable manner.

OBITUARY NOTICE.

The great and the good man dieth also. — Died, at his late residence, on the 24th inst., at the advanced age of 82 years, the Hon. Daniel Penfield, the original founder and proprietor of the large and flourishing town bearing his name, and of which he became an early resident. 'Mr. P., as early as 1802, erected a grist mill and saw mill — soon after a spacious merchant mill, clothing works, cooperage, oil mill, and many other buildings for the benefit of the settlers who were generally poor, many of which would have starved had it not been for his liberal hand, who opened his mill and gave them bread. Mr. P., after parting with the most of his estate, was so attached to his town, he could not think of leaving it. Mr. P. early erected a tasteful family residence, where hundreds of his fellow citizens have been cheered from his plentiful board and liberal hand. His wife, who died some years since, shared with him the privations and unhealthfulness incident to the settlement of a new country. She was a daughter of General Fellows of Sheffield, Mass., and sister of Henry Fellows, esq., now a resident of Penfield. — [Communicated.

On Sunday morning, Henry Sparks, aged 35 years.

pointing hand The friends of the family are invited to attend his funeral on Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, from his residence on Jones street.

OBITUARY.

Died, September 28th at the residence of her son-in-law, Gen. Micah Brooks, Mount Morris, Livingston county, N. Y., Mrs. Elizabeth Chattin, aged 67, formerly of Salem, Washington county, N. Y.

A tribute to the unobtrusive and scriptural piety of this excellant woman, her friends and all who have been associated with her, feel to be sacredly due both to the memory of the holy dead, and to the feelings and interests of the living. It is seldom that the individual is found who exemplifies more consistently and systematically, than did Mrs. C., the divine principle of "doing unto others as ye would that they should do unto you." With an unequivocal reliance for salvation upon the unmerited mercy of God through Christ, she at the same time felt deeply convinced that the only available faith is that which manifests itself by good works, transforms the character into the image of heaven, and thus morally assimilates man to God. Habitually influenced by this sublime conception, her life was a bright illustration of the Christian virtues, and a powerful witness to the Divinity of our holy religion. By her uniform benevolence, uprightness, justice and purity od character; by her cheerful trust in the providence of God, maintained through a long life, and finally by the cheerful resignation and composure of spirit evinced by her during the lingering and painful illness that her desire and prayer to have no will of her own, she was permitted up to closing scene of conscious existence, beautifully to recommend the religion of the Son of God to all who knew her, and to leave an example, which they "should not willingly suffer to die."

Though dead, she yet speaketh, and her voice is one of mingled admonition and encouragement: — "Since your Lord is so soon to appear to take account of his servants, 'be diligent, that ye may be found of him without spot and blameless, that ye may not be ashamed before him at his coming.'"

OBITUARY.

Died on the 6th inst., of congestive fever, Mrs. Aurelia Adams, daughter of Asel Fitch, of Rochester, N. Y. and consort of Mr. R. H. Adams of this city, aged 27 years. In her death her parents and husband have met with a great and irreparable loss. She was a daughter of deep affection, and greatly beloved; as a wife, she was all that is implied in that sacred name, mild, amiable, kind and devoted. She was much beloved by all who knew her, and well she merited the high esteem they cherished for her. Her illness was of but five days duration, and was very violent, but she sustained it with great fortitude and christian resignation; death had no terrors for her spirit; her hope was in the Saviour of sinners; she knew she was dying, and delivered herself through the grace of God, resigned and willing to depart. It is a pleasing reflection that she died in the midst of a large circle of attentive friends, and no effort was spared to relive her and restore her to health. Solemn and appropriate religious services were performed at the residence by the Rev. C. K. Marshall, and concluded at the grave, to which her remains were followed by a very large and sorrowing procession.

Her illness was of but five days duration, and was violent, but she sustained it with great fortitude and Christian resignation; death had no terrors for her spirit; her hope was in the Saviour of sinners; she knew she was dying, and delivered herself through the grace of God, resigned and willing to depart.

OBITUARY.

There is something, though sacred and solemn, yet pleasing, linked with the recollection of departed friends who deserve to live in the undying honors of a spot leas character, which arouses afresh every feeling emotion of the bosom while we record their names and death. Such is the cherished memory of David Bates, who recently died at Piqua, Ohio.

He was an honest, impartial, faithful and well tried public servant. He had held an influential station in the department of Public Works for several years wherein be manifested more than a common degree of industry, and zeal, united with sound judgment, discretion, and every requisite qualification, while the character of his genius was destined to raise him to eminent honor. Although be possessed every endowment claimed by the highest circle of toe rich, which tend to render them proud and scornful, yet he never refused to lend an attentive ear to the claims of the poorest laborer. His generosity will be remembered, by many of that class long after the green grass shall have grown and withered again over the grave of the departed philanthropist.

We hope to see his station filled by an individual honest and capable, but we never expect to see an imitation of his character. He had secured to himself a permanent seal in the affections of all honest and upright men within the circumference of his authority as a public officer. A new scene had opened upon the people of this village within the short space of one year since his residence here. Constant employment and high wages was held out to mechanics with every inducement to active industry.

He had recently laid the plan and foundation of an extensive system of merchandising—but the consumer had marked him. He had been ailing for several months previous, but was recovering till within s few days of his death, with every prospect of health and prosperity before him. He had resumed his usual sensiduity when his official duties required his attendance at Piqua, where he died October l9th, 1840, in the 31d year of his age, lamented by every friend of justice who know him.

The friends and relatives of the deceased, and of the family, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral at 10 o'clock on Saturday morning, from the residence of Mr. Hector Hunter, Centre Park.

The amiable and affectionate daughter—the kindhearted and companionable friend–is no more. Consumption, the insidious destroyer, had marked her for its prey; and that form, which but a short time since, was glowing with health, beauty and loveliness, has fallen a victim to the blighting power of disease, while yet in prime of youth, and surrounded by all else that could make life desirable. She bore up under the pains and privations of disease with the meekness and resignation of the christian...and died in the full and brightening hope of a happy immortality. She was endeared to a large and respectable circle of relatives and friends, who will deplore the loss of their young and lovely friends, with deepest sorrow.

Of an unusually cheerful and amiable disposition, and scrupulously honest in his dealing with his fellow-men, was beloved by all acquainted with him. Ever inclined to look for a sunny side even in calamities, both apparent and real, the heavy pecuniary losses he sustained at Hamilton during the Patriot difficulties, only tended to stimulate him in the commendable determination he seems to have early formed, to provide a comtetence of "this world's goods" for those dependent upon him. And it was with a view to carry out this determination, that he embarked in a business at Cleveland, a few months since, that promised him a golden harvest—but he was soon summoned before his God, whom, it is believed, he was fully prepared to meet.—Com.
