Marriages in New York State weren't recorded by the state until 1880. For early marriages you have to either find church records or hope that the marriage is recorded in the newspaper. The earliest newspaper published in Monroe County is the Rochester Gazette which was first published in June 1816. For a list of early newspapers published see the list at the bottom of this page.
The best collection of old Monroe County newspapers is at the Rochester Public Library. Most of the newspapers were filmed many years ago but there are a few that exist in bound volumes. As a part of a work project during the great depression, the newspapers in the collection of the Rochester Public Library were indexed for years 1818 - 1903. This index in extremely valuable to genealogists but it is only available in the Rochester Public Library.
The records on this page cover the year 1830. Most records were extracted by Anah B. Yates and published in her newspaper articles titled Early Rochester Family Records in the Rochester Post-Express from 1910 - 1913. Foe some unknown reason, she did skip a few years worth of newspapers. I also found collections of newspapers at University of Rochester, Rochester Museum and Science Center and State University of New York at Brockport that had newspapers that were not in the collection at the Rochester Public Library. I extracted many marriages from these newspapers for the early period of Monroe County history. Each record on this page has a reference to where it came from. See the reference list at the bottom of this page. Mrs. Yates did not record which newspaper she got her records from.
You may not see a record for your ancestor on this page. There are two other places on the internet with Monroe County newspaper records; the Monroe County section of Newspaper Abstracts and Monroe County, NY, Early News. You should also check the newspaper index at Rochester Public Library to see if there is a marriage recorded. The number of marriages recorded in any of th e newspapers is probably fairly low. The newspapers did appear to publish all marriages of Doctors, Lawyers and newspapers people. The common marriage is recorded much less often.
